LAHORE: Nida Nusrat, daughter of legendary singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, has announced to sue Wikipedia for spreading fake information on marriage to cousin Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and warned all those misusing her father's name by using her music rights.
"Rahet's wife is my namesake but she is another woman. I am still unmarried," she clarified.
"I am the only daughter and sole heiress of qawaal legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. I have no siblings. Wikipedia and other such websites are spreading fake news about my marriage with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. I have written emails to them but they are not responding so I have decided to sue them," she said in her maiden media appearance at the Lahore Press Club Friday. This is Nusrat's first appearance after the demise of her father, music maestro father Nusrat Fateh Ali who had enthralled the audience across the globe through the magic of his music and voice.
She revealed that she along with her mother went into hiding in Canada since they were unable to bear the shocking death of her father.
"I was a small kid when my father died years ago. My mother and I were not able to bear this irreparable and sudden loss since we never had the habit of living without him. So we settled in Canada. However, now I have grown up and settled in Pakistan."
She warned all those using his father intellectual property rights (music rights) and said that she would be taking legal action against them. "I have sent legal notices to them that music rights of my father should not be used. I have further decided that people who are using my father's music rights in India and other countries will be sued and legal action would be taken against them. I have sent notices to Khokhar Productions for using my father music rights. "
Furthermore, she denied all differences with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
"He is my brother and there are no differences with him."
However, she said she would settle matters with him vis-a-vis music rights. "Until now, he has been continuing my father's legacy. I have no plan to take legal action against him."
Nida also revealed plans to join the music industry. "I will join the music industry very soon since music is in my blood."
She announced that she would officially launch never-heard-before songs, ghazals and qawwalis of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the near future.
"I am preparing a website for this purpose and soon the audience will hear that music of my father which had never been made public."
Nida Nusrat also warned people who have made blogs, fake Facebook accounts and pages and announced to take action against them.
The King of Qawwali Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan died in London in 1997 at the age of 48. His nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has been carrying forward his legacy after his death.
In a press conference held at the Lahore Press Club, his daughter Nida Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan stated that she plans to take action against people who have used her father's song without asking for permission. "After my father's death, I possess the rights to his music. I will be taking strict action against the people who are using them and will also be taking them to the court," said Nida.
She added that a local music firm by the name of Khokhar Productions has forged her signatures and falsely taken the rights of Nusrat's music. She has issued them with a legal notice and also asked them to pay a compensation.
Many of the yesteryear singer's songs have been used in various Bollywood films which have been crooned by the maestro's nephew, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. When asked if Nida was also taking action against Rahat with her allegations, she explained, "I am not going against Rahat. He is a brother to me. Many people have spread rumours on social media that the two of us are married but we are not and he is happy with his married life. I am only taking action against the people who have misused by father's music and claim it as their own."
She continued, "There are many other songs that my father aimed to introduce to the world but never got the chance to. I will be launching those songs now." According to Nida, Indians who are plagiarising Nusrat's work will also be held accountable and served with a legal notice. On providing details of the notices sent to production houses in both Pakistan and India, Nida revealed she will be holding a separate conference in the near future to address all such concerns.
She also shared that people have created fake accounts in her father's name on social media and urged them to stop spreading fallacies. Nida confirmed that she is the only daughter of Nusrat, even though many have come forth impersonating her.
